Yeah! I know a lot of turtle lovers will look at our initial tank and be like "They are doing everything wrong" Of course that small little plastic tank is just sort of a plastic gift box (Remember?! These babies are my birthday present), hubby and I went out to get all the items needed to give them a conducive, happy home the next day. How my sister puts it? Upgrading from a terrace house to a bungalow for these two cheekies!
Went out on the weekend to get all the equipment for them. Yes sliders (that is the right species name! I was told last time it was GREEN TURTLE!? And that had caused me to not get any information online about them!) need a big space to swim and to bask! I got a little experience with my previous turtle and hence it was easier this time! We went to various aquariums and pet shops to get a complete set of "required" things.
Went to the first shop and it pisses me off a little! You know why? When we asked about the sizes and variety of tanks they carried, the guy started to lecture us about "WHY YOU NEED SUCH A BIG TANK FOR "GREEN TURTLES"?" "THEY ONLY NEED PLASTIC TANK SO YOU CAN CHANGE THEIR WATER EVERY ALTERNATE DAY" "WHY NEED HEATER?! THEY DON'T NEED HEATER?! NORMAL TAP WATER WILL BE JUST NICE" "DON'T WASTE MONEY GETTING THINGS YOU DON'T NEED?!?" "I NEVER HEARD OF "GREEN TURTLE" NEED ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PLASTIC TANK" Now that just pissed me off so hubby and I walked off saying "Thanks for your information" We just went to another shop to get em! This guy do not know a thing about Red Eared Sliders! We do not want to waste our time and our money on him!
The best part of the whole thing is the journey around town with hubby! We went to a pet shop in Setia Indah and we bought the biggest tank there, the tubes for water change, the rocks and the turtle ladder! After that we went to few shops but they only sell dogs and cats items. We finally found the one that sold us the basking lamp and also the heater at Johor Jaya Aquarium shop! We even went back to the shop where hubby got the turtles from and got a tank filter and some supplements for them. So hence quickly we headed home to set up the new living space for our little ones!
This is our first attempt! Errr! That is not a very smart improvement to be honest! We modified the turtle ladder with the rough cloth so that they can climb because the original ladder came with a layer of fake grass and these kids like to nibble on it! One of them even swallowed a small bit of it (No worries, she later vomited it out) but we do not want further hazard so we change the grass to the cloth! Yet this is a FAIL! Both turtles seems to like the rock but not the ladder! They were never up there! They will climb halfway and then jump down and hit their head on the rock! So it was a bad idea after all! Plus they like to climb on the rock and rest there, the plastic from the ladder blocks direct lighting when they are on the rocks so we had to put our thinking caps on and improvised!
Ta-dah! Smarter now! With this, they have place to bask directly under the light (Oh! They loved it) and then they can have bigger space to swim, underneath and above and everywhere! Ha! Ha! The one near the rock is Dona! And the one near the filter is Raphael! (Yeah we name them after Ninja Turtles - Funny!) So here is to happy turtles times and they are indeed growing! Last I checked Rap is getting fatter too! So my prayers to my Heavenly Father is the same! That they will grow strong, healthy and live a full life with us! So for now Care-Bears Mama OUT!
